Meet the Owner
Hi, I’m Makitha Griffin, founder of Mum Away From Mom. As a proud member of the Auburn community, I know firsthand the unique challenges students face when they’re away from home and the peace of mind parents long for when they can’t be nearby. That’s why I started Mum Away From Mom— to bring comfort and care to college students while easing the worries of moms and families from miles away.
Her story.
Makitha Griffin’s journey with Mum Away From Mom began in the simplest way: by noticing a need and answering God’s call to serve. Living in Auburn, she would often cross paths with college students far from home who needed a helping hand, whether it was a ride, a meal, or someone to check in on them. Moved by compassion, Makitha began stepping in, offering support to students as if they were her own. What started as small, random acts of kindness quickly became a mission that blended her faith with her desire to strengthen her community.
Over time, word spread, and so did the impact. Parents found comfort knowing there was someone they could trust to look after their sons and daughters while away at college. Students felt less lonely, more supported, and more grounded. Friends and mentors encouraged Makitha to turn her calling into a business, reminding her that her service filled a gap for families navigating the challenges of sending kids off to school. Out of this encouragement and her own determination, Mum Away From Mom was born as a business built on care, trust, and faith.
Makitha has since leaned into her entrepreneurial journey with the same spirit of service that first inspired her. She completed the Lowder Center’s Jumpstart Entrepreneurship course, equipping herself with tools to scale and sustain her vision. She also connected with the Lowder Center’s Startup Studio, working on brand refinement and a website to better reach families in need. Today, Makitha continues to grow her business with faith, purpose, and a deep commitment to the students and families she serves.
